Grylls and Paige, Redruth, Cornwall, solicitors. Leases Perranzabuloe. FILE [no title] - ref. GP495 - date: 5 April 1742 [from Scope and Content] To begin after the death of John Argall of Perranzabuloe.

Believed to have owned or leased part of the manor of Ventongimps. (From the Weekly Newspaper 7th August, 1857):
The meadows in question were called Barn Meadows and Stone Hill; and they were part and parcel of the manor of Ventongimps in the parish of Perranzabuloe. This was an ancient manor; and it would appear that on it was an ancient tenement called Ventongimps and Gilberts, which had never been in the occupation of the Leys, but had been leased out from time to time to different parties. It would appear too that that tenement had been divided - one portion of it passing for many years as Clark's Moiety, and the other portion as Argall's.

DEATH: Death is assumed to have occurred 2 days before burial.

BURIAL: Burial recorded in INDEX TO BURIALS IN PERRANZABULOE 1682 - 1800. Perranzabuloe burial register, unusually prefixes his name with the title 'Mr.' indicating some status.

John had a son, full name William James Argall, born 1896. He died as a child. John Argall's wife Jane Ann Tinney was said to have refused to go out again after losing her son but I remember her well. She died in August 1945, and her only nephew was killed in Normandy in 1944, so she had nothing but cousins after that which included my own grandmother so that is how I knew them. There is a picture of John Argall in the book 'St Columb Minor Memories and Parish History'. There are a lot of items which came from The Farmers Arms including John Argall's School book which he later used as a diary in the 1890s.

MARRIAGE: Marriage cannot be found in Madron Parish; supposition is that he married in his Bride's Parish which is probably one of the surrounding parishes. The record may now be lost.

He is assumed to have moved to Perranzabuloe after his father's younger brother had taken possesssion of the Luthergwearne farm in Madron, and probably after the death of his wife; he must have moved to be with his two elder sons and only about a month before he died.

BURIAL: Burial is recorded in Perranzabuloe parish registers. Death is assumed to have occurred 2 days before burial.

Notes
General:
OCCUPATION: Lawyer on the Archbishop of Canterbury's Estate at Lambeth.

WILLS:
Will held in PRO (unknown).

GENERAL NOTES: There is no proof of the place of his birth; however, there is proof that he owned the property at Treglossick, St Keverne, Cornwall. He was, probably, a Church Lawyer.
Because he was concerned with property in Cornwall, it is likely that he or his father were born there and that he was the eldest son. He later lived in a house on the Archbishop of Canterbury's estate at Lambeth.

In the visitation of Essex in 1612, he is described as 'a gentleman of London'.
PRO - "EARLY CHANCERY PROCEEDINGS - 1485 to 1500", Bundle 125 (page 42) reveals that he was involved in a case, addressed to the Archbishop of Canterbury (1486 to 1493 and 1504 to 1515) against THOMAS CHEMDEN and MAUD his wife, over the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and gardens called DORNE in Cornwall. Bundle 183, addressed to the Cardinal Archbishop of Canterbury (1493 to 1500) (page 30) concerned a case between JOHN ARGALL and JOHN KELWAY of Trespusen, (Tresprison? in Cornwall) relating to the detention of Deeds relating to a messuage and land in Treglosek (Treglossik), Cornwall (which is in St Keverne Parish).
[Deeds in Cornwall County Records Office (J 127) concern Treglossak from the 14th Century, but there is no mention of any Argall connection].

Argall, John (b. in or before 1545, d. 1606), Church of England clergyman and logician, was born in London, the third son of Thomas Argall (1499/1500-1563) ecclesiastical official, and of Margaret (d. 1592), daughter of John Tallakarne or Talkerne of Cornwall. Near the end of Queen Mary's reign he became a student at Christ Church, Oxford, from where he graduated BA on 22 October 1562 and proceeded MA on 13 February 1566, having been a prominent disputant. According to his later recollections he much enjoyed student life, participating in bathing parties and once for a joke, having been paid to keep out dogs, admitting a pig into Christ Church choir. He also distinguished himself as an actor, especially in a play put on during Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1566. However, while contemporaries such as Tobie Matthew went on to high office in the church, Argall became a poor country clergyman, though at some point he did visit Ireland.

Argall became rector of Chalgrove, Oxfordshire, in 1571 and of Cadleigh, Devon, two years later. At an unknown date he married Anna Daniels of Cornwall, and had children. In 1580 he was presented by his step-father, Sir Giles Allington, to the rectory of Halesworth, Suffolk, where he began a communion attendance book which survives; the entry for Christmas day 1594 notes that 'the weather was so cold, I could not thaw my ink to write down the names of the communicants' (Lambert, 17). He proceeded BD on 19 February 1583. From 1585 to 1589 and from 1590 to 1593 respectively he also held the nearby crown livings of Holton and Heveningham, but he reportedly gave much time to study. The fruits appeared in his De vera poenitentia (1604), a relatively short work on penitence with a lengthy dedication to James I, and the more substantial Ad artem dialecticam introductio (1605). Both works contain autobiographical comment, and even the latter, a copy of which was presented by the author to Thomas Bodley, was a 'light-hearted' textbook (Thomas, 297). In the humanist tradition Argall rejected late medieval logic in favour of argument based on a more accurate grasp of the classical languages, but he remained wedded to Aristotle and recommended no Ramist reading.<br>

On 23 October 1605 Argall was licensed to preach. A year later he died suddenly at a feast at neighbouring Chediston, and was buried in Halesworth church on 8 October 1606.
